Sci-Fi Summer #Readathon - Mid-Event Check-in (sort of) and some news

Take the Christmas in July Readathon Survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NC5RWYF

So, how is your sci-fi (fantasy) reading going? I hope all is going well. I'm halfway through Childhood's End and really enjoying it.

Share your progress, or a link to your update, in the comments. Now on to the...

I've been hearing this statement (or close to it) here and there around our social media..."This needs to be a month long event!" Well, you spoke, and I listened. Sci-Fi Summer is officially extended throughout June, and future Sci-Fi Summers will now always be month long events. Since it is now a month long, the rules will change a bit. Yes, you still need to show that you are/have been reading science fiction (or fantasy), but you can also read in other genres as well. I've updated our current button to reflect our extension to the entire month. Woot!

Now for the next bit of news. I like to have at least a month buffer between each month long readathon. Since Sci-Fi Summer is now a month long event, that would lead us straight into High Summer in July. So, I'm moving High Summer to August! It will work well for me because I'm doing Camp NaNoWriMo next month (I often participate each summer). I hope everyone is okay with the change.

Sci-Fi Summer #Readathon - Sign up #SciFiJune

As always, a shout out to the person who originally inspired this event...Mallory (The Haunted Reading Room). Year four, people! I'm super excited that this event goes over so well each year.

Details:
  • Read-a-Thon dates: Saturday, June 1 at 12:00am CDT until Friday, June 14 at 11:59pm CDT (adjust your time zone accordingly...there's a time zone converter in the sidebar menu). We do a different day configuration (rather than starting on a Monday and ending on a Sunday) to go along with the quirkiness of science fiction. 👽
  • Since science fiction is a very specific genre, this will be strictly reading science fiction during the event. However, since fantasy is so closely related to the genre (often grouped together), if you feel more comfortable reading fantasy, that is also fine.
  • to check in on social media, our new hashtag is #SciFiJune
  • as usual, you do not have to have a blog to participate...feel free to link up and check in from Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Also, we have our Facebook and Goodreads groups, and we're on Instagram
  • As always, please refer to the Guidelines page (link also in the sidebar menu) if you have any questions. For any newbies, there are specific guidelines we use for wrapping up and the giveaway. You can always contact me via the contact me tab if you have any questions.
  • Grab a button! You can get it from the sidebar using the handy grab code, or save the image to your computer to share.
I'm not sure I will be able to procure any prize donations this time, but I will be offering a small prize myself. If anyone would like to donate a prize, just let me know.

That's it! Sign up in the linky below.

Grand Prize from RDSP

WINNER - SARAH
Print copy of Mr. Wicker by Marie Alexander (One Winner - U.S. only)

MR. WICKER IS THE RECIPIENT OF A BRAM STOKER AWARD FOR SUPERIOR ACHIEVEMENT IN A FIRST NOVEL

Alicia Baum is missing a deadly childhood memory. Located beyond life, The Library of Lost Childhood Memories holds the answer. The Librarian is Mr. Wicker — a seductive yet sinister creature with an unthinkable past and an agenda just as lethal. After committing suicide, Alicia finds herself before the Librarian, who informs her that her lost memory is not only the reason she took her life, but the cause of every bad thing that has happened to her.

Alicia spurns Mr. Wicker and attempts to enter the hereafter without the Book that would make her spirit whole. But instead of the oblivion she craves, she finds herself in a psychiatric hold at Bayford Hospital, where the staff is more pernicious than its patients.

Child psychiatrist Dr. James Farron is researching an unusual phenomenon: traumatized children whisper to a mysterious figure in their sleep. When they awaken, they forget both the traumatic event and the character that kept them company in their dreams — someone they call “Mr. Wicker.”

During an emergency room shift, Dr. Farron hears an unconscious Alicia talking to Mr. Wicker—the first time he’s heard of an adult speaking to the presence. Drawn to the mystery, and then to each other, they team up to find the memory before it annihilates Alicia for good. To do so they must struggle not only against Mr. Wicker’s passions, but also a powerful attraction that threatens to derail her search, ruin Dr. Farron’s career, and inflame the Librarian’s fury.

After all, Mr. Wicker wants Alicia to himself, and will destroy anyone to get what he wants. Even Alicia herself.

Prizes from Erin at Oh, for the Hook of a Book

WINNER - SARAH
We Should Have Left Well Enough Alone by Ronald Malfi  (One print copy - U.S. only)

A new mother is pursued by mysterious men in black. A misguided youth learns the dark secrets of the world from an elderly neighbor on Halloween night. A housewarming party where the guests never leave. A caretaker tends to his rusted relic of a god deep in the desert...

In his debut short story collection, Bram Stoker Award finalist Ronald Malfi mines the depths and depravities of the human condition, exploring the dark underside of religion, marriage, love, fear, regret, and hunger in a world that spins just slightly askew on its axis. Rich in atmosphere and character, Malfi's debut collection is not to be missed.

WINNERS - BARB, ELYSE
Something Borrowed, Something Bloodsoaked by Christa Carmen  (One Two eBook copies - International)

A young woman’s fears regarding the gruesome photos appearing on her cell phone prove justified in a ghastly and unexpected way. A chainsaw-wielding Evil Dead fan defends herself against a trio of undead intruders. A bride-to-be comes to wish that the door between the physical and spiritual worlds had stayed shut on All Hallows’ Eve. A lone passenger on a midnight train finds that the engineer has rerouted them toward a past she’d prefer to forget. A mother abandons a life she no longer recognizes as her own to walk up a mysterious staircase in the woods.

In her debut collection, Christa Carmen combines horror, charm, humor, and social critique to shape thirteen haunting, harrowing narratives of women struggling with both otherworldly and real-world problems. From grief, substance abuse, and mental health disorders, to a post-apocalyptic exodus, a seemingly sinister babysitter with unusual motivations, and a group of pesky ex-boyfriends who won’t stay dead, Something Borrowed, Something Blood-Soaked is a compelling exploration of horrors both supernatural and psychological, and an undeniable affirmation of Carmen’s flair for short fiction.

WINNERS - DARLENE, BARB
Palace of Ghosts by Thomas S. Flowers  (One Two eBook copies - International)

Evil resides in Amon Palace. Something worse came to visit.
Four veterans of the Iraq War seeking a cure for Post-Traumatic-Stress Disorder arrive at a notoriously haunted house in the bogs of Galveston Island called Amon Palace.

Samantha Green, a friendless former Army K-9 handler looking for a way to put her loss behind her.

Brad Myers, a lighthearted former Military Police Officer severally wounded in war wanting nothing more than a good nights sleep.

Andy Lovejoy, an overweight light spoken drone operator who once watched the war from above now questions who he has become.

Marcus Pangborn, a headstrong Marine who desperately wants a dead friend’s forgiveness.

The group joins Doctor Frederick Peters, an experimental psychologist looking to prove his exposure theory hypothesis, and his two assistants, Tiffany Burgess and Dexter Reid.

At first, their stay seems to conjure nothing more than spooky encounters with inexplicable phenomena. But Amon Palace is gathering its powers—and soon it will reveal that these veterans are not who they seem.

Please Disappear: An unputdownable thriller with a dark twist by M.K. Shivakoti (Print copy - one winner, U.S. only)

Please Disappear is a new gripping psychological thriller that will keep you guessing till the end.

Arun and Gabriel are tormented by their demons. While one is desperate to find his beloved, the other wants his to disappear. This is their story.

It's been three days since Sara Sardana disappeared. Last Seen: The Promenade Shops at Greenmile Walk. Last Phone Call: To her boyfriend. She told him she would share a ride home, but there's no record of a ride request or any sign of foul play. While authorities are baffled, Arun Shah, Sara's ex-, is distraught. He betrayed her when they were together, and now his guilty conscience isn't letting him breathe.

Unlike Sara, Katie left because she found a job in the city. Meeting Katie provided seventeen-year old Gabriel with a much needed respite from his otherwise dull and partially-blind existence. He misses Katie every time he goes to the hospital where they used to volunteer together. But when Gabriel starts to see her every night in his dreams, something is wrong with her. Dream Katie is dark and melancholy, unlike her real self. She even attacks him with murderous rage one night. He thought he wanted her back, but now he's losing his mind. How can he sleep anymore knowing she will be waiting for him on the other side?

In their state of despair, Arun and Gabriel meet. But time is ticking. Arun needs to connect the dots the police are missing and find Sara soon, before she becomes a statistic. Gabriel needs to make Katie disappear, before she drives him insane.

Spring into Horror #Readathon - Green light for a month of #Horror #SpringHorror

It's here! I'm so excited! How about you?

Remember, the one main "rule" of Spring into Horror is that you must read ONE scary book (which can be a thriller, mystery, Gothic novel, or similar for those who are faint of heart). The rest of the month? Keep reading scary if you want, or read whichever genre you choose. Also, Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon is coming up this Saturday, April 6th. I'm trying to clear my schedule as much as possible, but I simply must go see Pet Sematary on Saturday!

I'm still working on prizes. Erin Al-Mehairi, who always gives us some awesome horror book prizes, will be offering a bunch for the giveaway AND she will be offering a free book for everyone interested early in the readathon. Stay tuned for details on what the title will be. I'll post about it in the Facebook group, on Instagram and in the Goodreads group

I'm going to try have the official prize page posted by the end of the first week.

Don't forget that you can participate even if you don't have a blog. Just link up with your Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram (and just post your updates from whichever venue you choose) AND don't forget to interact with us in our groups on Facebook and Goodreads, and Instagram! If you have any questions about updates, etc., feel free to ask. I will be posting a mid-event check-in middle of the month, and, of course, will do my best to interact across social media.

Social media hashtag across all platforms - #SpringHorror (you can also use #Readathon).

If you have any questions about how things work, check out the guidelines tab above or the sign up post, or you can always leave me a comment. This is the same linky used for sign-ups so if you do a starting line/goal post, just add your link again, but be sure to put "goal post" beside your name, i.e. Michelle/True Book Addict (goal post). Note: If you're just signing up, you can do it here on this post. It's the same linky.

Spring into Horror #Readathon - Join us! #SpringHorror

Welcome to the official sign up for the Spring into Horror Readathon! A month of horror...yes! We start at 12:00 am on April 1 and end at 11:59 pm on April 30. Times are set for the central time zone so adjust your times accordingly (you can use the link to the time zone converter in the sidebar menu).

Just remember...the one main "rule" of Spring into Horror is that you must read at least ONE scary book (which can be a thriller, mystery, Gothic novel, or similar for those who are faint of heart). Since we are doing a month long, I hope you will indulge the scary a bit more, but that is entirely up to you. It is all about the reading after all. After you've read your "scary" title (or before...you don't have to read the scary one first), you can read whatever you want in any genre. Novels, novellas, comic books, children's books, non-fiction. Anything goes!

You DO NOT have to participate the entire month. Join in when you can, start in the middle, end early...whatever works best for your schedule. As with all of my readathons, it will be an event of relaxed reading during which we can personally challenge ourselves and whittle away those ever looming TBR piles/shelves/libraries. Also, Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon is on April 6th so that will be a fun addition to our month of reading bliss.

Guidelines for the readathon can be found HERE or you can access in the sidebar menu. Any information you need about the readathon can be found there. Please do be sure to check the guidelines to make sure you're following along correctly. There are specific rules regarding signing up and wrapping up, especially in regards to the giveaway. We no longer use a wrap-up linky and we are now just using the Google form for wrap-ups (since I require your wrap-up link there anyway). That way you don't have to do two steps at the end of the readathon. The wrap-up Google form will be on the wrap-up post instead of the prize page. I will have a yes/no so you can let me know if you're opting out of winning a prize. (If you want to visit people who participated, you can do so via the sign-up/starting line linky. I will have a link to it on the wrap-up post).

As is typical, I will not be hosting any mini-challenges. However, if anyone else would like to host a mini-challenge or giveaway, you are more than welcome. I am also looking for prize donations so if anyone would like to contribute, let me know. Authors, this is a great way to promote your book(s)! (Contact me using the contact form link in the sidebar menu).

Our hashtag for social media is #SpringHorror Also, don't forget about our Facebook group, our Goodreads group and our Instagram. You can also access via the links in the sidebar menu.

Sign up in the linky below. You do not have to do a post now, unless you want to help spread the word (much appreciated). If you don't have a blog, use Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, Instagram, YouTube...or any social media. Having a blog is not required. Be sure to grab the button at the top of this post (there's also a grab code below the button in the sidebar).

I apologize for being MIA the latter part of the month. I came down with the flu (despite getting the flu shot...I always do) and I'm just now starting to feel back to my old self again. I swear, it always seems to hit me during a readathon. I couldn't even participate in 24in48 because I was really bad last weekend. Sob.

Remember, our process has changed for wrap-ups. No more linky for wrap-up posts. Fill out the form below and indicate if you want a chance at a prize by selecting yes or no. Also, double check that your name is listed in the sign up/starting line linky at this post so you will be eligible for the giveaway. You have until Wednesday, February 6th at 11:59 pm CST to fill out the form. I will email the winners within a few days following the deadline so keep a look out in your email inbox (or spam folder, just in case) for an email from my truebookaddict gmail account. (Prize page is here)

Once again, thank you for joining me and I hope to see you next time. We have Spring into Horror all month long in April! I'm going to be ready for lots of horror reading by then.

On the big opening night of the restaurant, she’s faced with making yet another difficult decision. She knows it’s time to take her life in the right direction; although in order to do this, she may need to let go again.

WINNERS - MALLORY (ebook), FRANCES (print)
Norse Hearts by Robynn Gabel - (1) eBook (International) and (1) signed paperback (U.S) - One Two Winners

“This is a historical adventure/romance that even a man can read and enjoy!”

In late 800 AD, Britain, Seraphina is preparing to wed Cecil Allard. Unbeknown to her, he has hired Einar, a Viking warrior, to kill her the night before the marriage. When Cecil reneges on the promised payment, Einar kidnaps her to hold her hostage for ransom.

Seraphina is carried away to the “uncivilized” world of the Vikings only to find an unexplainable connection with the Viking way of life which can be both noble and cruel.

Through this incredible journey, she discovers abilities beyond her imagination and an untapped warrior spirit. However, Seraphina is torn between the land of her birth and a fierce new life with the Vikings. She must make a choice that only her heart can decide.

REVIEWS

“The novel doesn’t gloss over the realities of Viking life but is careful to draw characters with shaded nuances.” Five star - Clarion Review

“Overall, Gabel has constructed a work of historical fiction that’s both faithful to the period and dramatically captivating.” – Kirkus Review

Robynn Gabel had two dreams growing up, writing books and riding horses. In her first two books, she fulfilled them both by publishing her award-winning story about her time with Elvis, a champion Missouri Fox Trotter. However, her continual pursuit of adventure pushed her off into the deeper waters of writing a historical romance novel taking place in the backdrop of the Viking Age.

An adventurer at heart herself she has always been an avid traveler and has held career positions in a variety of fields but Robynn’s calling to write has never wavered earning her prestigious literary awards. In her latest book, Norse Hearts, she draws from a rich treasure trove of experiences and painstaking research to provide not only a historically authentic tale but one with true emotional power only she can bring.

When she is not writing she lives life with her husband Mark in the wind-swept land of Wyoming riding Missouri Fox Trotters, and loving a large herd of children and grandchildren.

Winter's Respite #Readathon - "Reading" in the New Year! #WintersRespite

Happy New Year! Let's ring in the new year right...with a bunch of reading. If one of your new year goals/resolutions is to read more, well this is the place to start. We started at midnight central time and we're marathoning it all the way through January 31st. 2019...can you believe it!?

I did manage to line up a few prizes, and a couple from me, as usual. Also...

The author of The Art Collector of Le MaraisAhmad Ardalan is offering anyone who signs up for the readathon, and shows interest in reading it, ARCs in any ebook format. The book releases on January 15th. Leave a comment with your email address if you're interested. Very generous of him!

If you have any questions about how things work, check out the guidelines in the sidebar menu or the sign up post, or you can always leave me a comment (or send me a message via the contact form). The linky below is the same one as the sign up linky. If you do a starting line/goal post, just add your link again, but be sure to put "goal post" beside your name, i.e. Michelle/The True Book Addict (goal post).

I will post a mid-event check in post at the halfway point. Our hashtag for the readathon is #WintersRespite. Stop by our Facebook groupGoodreads group and check out our Instagram. You can also access via the links in the sidebar menu.

That's it! Happy Reading!
