2020 #Christmas Spirit #ReadingChallenge and #Readathon #CSReadathon

COVID has our holiday landscapes looking a lot different this year. With states going back to more strict mandates (much needed, in my opinion), it's looking like the holidays are going to be offering A LOT of downtime. In light of the current situation, I've decided to make the Christmas Spirit Readathon run the same length as the yearly reading challenge, and they are now co-events. Yay!

Dates: November 23, 2020 through January 6, 2021

Three ways to participate:
  1. Challenge - Pick a level
  2. Readathon - read as much (or as little) as you want
  3. Participate in both!
Regarding the reading of Christmas books, for the readathon, you do not have to read only Christmas books. I am always reading regular genres along with Christmas books during the season. Please do try to read at least one though. 🎄

For the reading challenge, these must be Christmas novels, books about Christmas lore, a book of Christmas short stories or poems, books about Christmas crafts, children's books (we even have a level for them!), etc.

Reading Challenge Levels:
--Candy Cane: read 1 book
--Mistletoe: read 2-4 books
--Christmas Tree: read 5 or 6 books, or more (this is the fanatic level!)

Additional levels:

--Fa La La La Films: watch a bunch or a few Christmas movies...it's up to you!
--Visions of Sugar Plums: read books with your children this season and share what you read

*the additional levels are optional, you still must complete one of the main reading levels above

I will have a review linky posted as a page at the Christmas Spirit site the day the challenge starts. You will find it in the menu at the top of the blog.

Sign up in the linky below. This linky will be the same one on this site and over at Christmas Spirit. No need to sign up both places. For this readathon in particular, we will do a wrap-up linky, in keeping with the regular process for the reading challenge.

THE PRIZE: The first person to post a review (must be from a book started on or after November 23) in the review linky at Christmas Spirit will win a $15 charitable donation to human rights organization of their choice, such as the ACLU, Boys and Girls Club, Human Rights Campaign, GLAAD, Amnesty International, It Gets Better, Planned Parenthood, or another human rights organization of your choice (food banks, homeless shelters would also apply), perhaps your local chapter or a local organization. This giveaway is open internationally. Note: I will not donate to any organization that does not believe that all are equal, regardless of gender, race or sexual orientation.

FINAL NOTE: In light of this new change to the Christmas Spirit Readathon, with the end date being January 6, the Winter's Respite Readathon will now be moved to February.

#FrightFall #Readathon - Wrap-up #SomethingWickedFall

FrightFall is at its end. I hope you enjoyed it, and our event Something Wicked Fall at Castle Macabre. We had a few fun movie watch-alongs, and we were reading along The Woman in White...which I STILL haven't finished. I didn't get much reading done at all, sad to say. I'm still working on my house and that has to be priority right now if I want to be completely out of boxes before the holidays.

Thank you all so much for joining in on another readathon!

Remember, our process has changed for wrap-ups. No more linky for wrap-up posts. Fill out the form at the end of this post and indicate if you want a chance at a prize by selecting yes or no. Also, double check that your name is listed in the sign up/starting line linky at this post so you will be eligible for the giveaway. You have until Friday, November 6 at 11:59 pm EST to fill out the form. I will email the winners within a few days following the deadline so keep a look out in your email inbox (or spam folder, just in case) for an email from my truebookaddict gmail account. (Prize page is here)

The Christmas Spirit Readathon is coming up this month, November 23 through December 6. The readathon also kicks off the season long Christmas Spirit Reading Challenge I host every year at Christmas Spirit. I hope you will join us! Stay tuned for details and sign-up.

Once again, thank you for joining me and I hope to see you next time.

(If you would like others to visit your wrap-up post, please leave a comment below with the link to your wrap-up, or you can visit participants via the starting line post linky here.)

#FrightFall Readathon - Check-in and Dewey's 24 Hour #Readathon #SomethingWickedFall

I have to apologize. lovely readers. I have been quite neglectful with updating and checking in during this readathon. I didn't even post a mid-event check-in! Egads! As you know, I moved house in August (from Tennessee to Michigan) and I'm STILL unpacking and shelving books. I still have a lot to do, but things are finally starting to shape up. So, at least I know I will have my house ready for the holidays. Anyway, I'm sorry!

I also have not been getting much reading done (pout) and the Woman in White read-along is not going so well either. I'm hoping Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon will help me remedy that. Anyone else participating in this cherished biannual event?

Let me know how your FrightFall reading is going and/or share your plans for the 24 Hour Readathon. Just comment below or leave a link to your post in the comments.

Happy scary reading!

Comfort Zone: A Tale of Suspense by Stephen Bentley - 3 eBooks and 1 print (all international) Four Winners

There’s a killer lurking in all of us. Sometimes you just don’t know it.

Take Phil Mercer, for example, what dark secret from his past changes a decent man, and respected professional into a man with murder on his mind?

Down to earth Northerner, Phil Mercer, begins to question why so-called university friends failed to help him establish a practice at London’s Criminal Bar.

Despite that and colleagues’ professional jealousy, he goes on to achieve success as a fearless defender of society’s less fortunate until his career is threatened by events triggered by something completely out of his control.

Figuring his life and career are about to change forever, Mercer strives to find a way to right wrongs by inventing a new parlour game called ‘Comfort Zone.’

At a dinner party surrounded by colleagues he insists they all play the game. He introduces it after dinner as a ‘storytelling game.’

He adds – “the easy choice is not an option at all. What terrifies you? What scares you shitless? Be brave. Be reckless. You are among friends. What can possibly go wrong? It’s just a parlour game, right?”

Get this dark suspense noir crime novella now.

Stephen Bentley is a former UK police Detective Sergeant, pioneering undercover detective, and barrister (trial attorney). He is now a freelance writer and HuffPost UK contributor on undercover policing and mental health issues.

His memoir 'Undercover: Operation Julie - The Inside Story' is a frank account of his undercover detective experiences during Operation Julie - an elite group of detectives who successfully investigated one of the world's largest drugs rings.

Stephen also writes crime fiction in a fast-paced plot-driven style including the Steve Regan Undercover Cop Thriller and the Detective Matt Deal Thriller series. One of his short stories, 'The Rose Slayer,' won the SIA murder mystery competition in 2018, and has now been published in a multi-author anthology of murder mystery short stories, titled 'Death Among Us.'

When he isn't writing, Stephen relaxes on the beaches of the Philippines with his family where he now lives. You may find him on Twitter as @StephenBentley8 or connect with him at stephenbentley.info where you may get his free thriller - a prequel to the Steve Regan Undercover Cop Thriller series.

#FrightFall #Readathon - Into the Further #SomethingWickedFall

Here we go!

Yup, it's going to be one of those two months. Muwhahaha. Are you ready?

In case you missed it, FrightFall this year is TWO months (due to High Summer's hiatus last month) and once again, the readathon is part of Something Wicked Fall at Castle Macabre. We are doing a read-along of The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins. We will also be doing a couple (a few?) horror movie watch-alongs. Stay tuned on all platforms to find out how to vote for the movies. If you have any suggestions, feel free to leave a comment.

Remember, the one main "rule" of FrightFall is that you must read ONE scary book (which can be a thriller, mystery, Gothic novel, or similar for those who are faint of heart). The rest of the month? Keep reading scary if you want, or read whichever genre you choose.

I did not get many prize donations this time. I did have a couple of prize offers (thank you to the generous authors!), and I will be offering a couple of prizes myself, as always. Everyone here knows that we like to make this about the reading anyway. I'll have the prize page posted by the end of the first week.

Don't forget that you can participate even if you don't have a blog. Just link up with your Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram (and just post your updates from whichever venue you choose) AND don't forget our Facebook group, Facebook Page, our Goodreads group, and our Instagram. If you have any questions about updates, etc., feel free to ask. I will post a mid-event check in post at the end of the first month so be sure to stop by and leave progress, or a link, in the comments.

Hashtag across all social media is #FrightFall Feel free to also use #SomethingWickedFall

The linky below is the same one as the sign up linky. If you do a starting line/goal post, just add your link again, but be sure to put "goal post" beside your name, i.e. Michelle/True Book Addict (goal post). Note: If you're just signing up, you can do it here on this post. It's the same linky.

#FrightFall #Readathon - Sign up! #SomethingWickedFall

Thanks for bearing with me on the hiatus of High Summer due to my move. I'll be honest. The move was hell...and we're still unpacking and arranging. I have thousands of books to shelve (which is probably the funnest part. lol). Well, one good thing which came from my move and the High Summer hiatus...a two month long FrightFall! Yes!

We start at 12:00 am eastern time on September 1st and end at 11:59 pm eastern time on October 31st. (There is a handy link to a time zone converter in the sidebar menu.) I hope you're ready to get your scary on! Guidelines for the readathon can be found HERE or you can access in the sidebar menu. Any information you need about the readathon can be found there. Please do be sure to check the guidelines to make sure you're following along correctly. There are specific rules regarding sign up and wrap up, especially in regards to the giveaway.

The one main "rule" of FrightFall is that you must read at least ONE scary book (which can be a thriller, mystery, Gothic novel, or similar for those who are faint of heart). Since we are doing a month long, I hope you will indulge the scary a bit more, but that is entirely up to you. It is all about the reading after all.

Reminder: I have eliminated the wrap-up linky and we are now just using the Google form for wrap-ups (since I require your wrap-up link there anyway). That way you don't have to do two steps at the end of the readathon. The wrap-up Google form will be on the wrap-up post instead of the prize page. I will have a yes/no so you can let me know if you're opting out of winning a prize. (If you want to visit people who participated, you can do so via the sign-up/starting line linky. I will have a link to it on the wrap-up post).

Our social media hashtag is #FrightFall We have our outstanding Facebook group and we now have a Facebook Page, and don't forget our our Goodreads group and our Instagram. (There are also access tabs in the sidebar menu.)

Two orders of business...
  • I am looking for prize donations so if anyone would like to contribute, let me know.
  • Authors, this is a great way to promote your book! Contact me via the contact form in the menu. If you know of an author who might be interested, pass along a message. Thanks!

For the past two years, FrightFall is officially a part of Something Wicked Fall, which runs September/October over at my horror blog, Castle Macabre. We are doing a read-along of Wilkie Collins' The Woman in White through the end of October. We start September 1st so there's still time to join in. We are also going to be having two or three movie watch-alongs. I'm mulling over some titles. Any suggestions? I will be creating a poll on SurveyMonkey soon to decide on dates/times.

Get all the details for what's going on during Something Wicked Fall here.

Sci-Fi Summer #Readathon Wrap-Up #SciFiJune

Another readathon is at its end. Boy, that went by fast. I guess when you're getting ready to move, the time moves like lightning. At least, that has been my experience so far. A little over a month to go. Just a reminder, I won't be seeing you again until September, as I've had to cancel High Summer in August due to my move, and I'm extending FrightFall to include September AND October. Fun!

How did the sci-fi (fantasy) reading go for you? I hope you enjoyed the journey.

Fill out the form below to share your wrap-up link, and indicate if you want a chance at a prize by selecting yes or no. Also, double check that your name is listed in the sign up/starting line linky at this post so you will be eligible for the giveaway. You have until Monday, July 6th at 11:59 pm CDT to complete your wrap-up and to fill out the form. I will email the winners within a few days following the deadline so keep a look out in your email inbox (or spam folder, just in case) for an email from my truebookaddict gmail account. Sci-Fi Summer #Readathon - Mid-Event Check-In #SciFiJune

We are at mid-event! Can't believe how time is flying! Wait a minute...yes, I can. I'm trying to stay as involved as I can with the readathon, but with my move looming ever closer (it has now been moved up by two weeks due to my son's college starting two weeks earlier because of COVID-19). Dealing with buying the new house and selling the current house. Plus, all the packing. Whew! A LOT!

How is the reading going? Hope you're getting in some good sci-fi (or fantasy) reading. Let me know in the comments, or share a link to your update.

In case you missed it, the prize page is here

That's all for now. I hope you continue to enjoy the readathon. Happy reading!

This is the giveaway/prize promotion page for all the prizes being given away for readathon participants. At the end of this post, you will find details regarding how the prizes will be awarded at the conclusion of the readathon.

Note: The author of the book donated would greatly appreciate a review, if you win, on your blog and/or social media and/or on Goodreads, Amazon. Thank you! (This is not required to win.)

Prizes from Ginger at Turn the Page

WINNER - MALLORY
The Birthing Tree By Ginger Schenck - One autographed print copy (US Only)

In The Birthing Tree, Annie starts to unravel the connection between her past growing up on a haunted farm and the bizarre road trip she finds herself on. For weeks, dreams and intuition, have called to her urging her to leave small-town life and strike out on a road trip to find herself. Pulled by an invisible force, she finds herself in the small northwestern town of Sutter, South Dakota with an unlikely band of confidants. She doesn't unravel her past but she does find something. It's old, with ancient desires.

In the process, she discovers the world she knows exists alongside another one. A reality that most people ignore. There is a darkness within the light, on the edges of humanity; it lingers at the boundary of consciousness. Hidden by denial, there is a creature that watches and waits. When Annie’s very existence threatens it, the dance of desire and hunger is overwhelming.

About the AuthorGinger Schenck lives in Missouri. She loves traveling, exploring haunted places, and collecting stories. The Birthing Tree, a paranormal adventure, is her first novel. Paranormal investigations and growing up on a haunted farm fuel her imagination. Many of the episodes from her childhood are woven into her writing. Her second novel, Dark Dealings, is scheduled for publication in August 2020, followed by the second book in The Birthing Tree Series, New Orleans Calls, which will be released in October 2020.

Important #Readathon News!

As some of you may already know (though many of you probably don't), I'm moving house in August. We live in Nashville, Tennessee (my mom, my sons, and I) and have wanted to move back to my hometown (Midland, Michigan) for a while now since my sister and her family still live up there. We planned to move after both boys were graduated, but my younger son (17) started home school last year so we decided to move sooner. Plus, my older son (who just graduated) is going to Central Michigan University in the fall.

I know, long story and you're probably asking...what does this have to do with Seasons of Reading?

Well, we have the High Summer Readathon coming up in August which, unfortunately, I'm going to have to cancel for this year. August is going to be our main packing and moving month. My mom retires on August 4th so we will need to finish packing up and be moved by the third week in August. We have to move Gabe into the dorms the week before classes start on August 31st. My August is going to be busy, busy, busy. I'll barely have time to think, let alone host a readathon. (Note: We usually have a small Christmas readathon during Christmas in July. I'm cancelling that for this year as well.)

I apologize, as I know many look forward to High Summer every year. So, to make up for it...drumroll please!!! This year's FrightFall Readathon will be two months, September AND October (coinciding with Something Wicked Fall at Castle Macabre)!!! Granted, I will be unpacking, etc. in September (and probably into October), but having a two month event will give me more time for my hosting duties, and reading. Well...what do you think? Does that make up for the loss of High Summer? I hope so. Of course, High Summer will be back in 2021 and we will make it a special one. I promise!

Thanks for understanding and wish us luck on our move. We're going to need it...

I have over 3000 books to pack so this will probably be me amidst the packing and moving. I do not doubt it.

Sci-Fi Summer #Readathon - Sign-Up! #SciFiJune

As always, a shout out to the person who originally inspired this event...Mallory (The Haunted Reading Room). Our fifth year! I look forward to this every year. I don't read enough science fiction so this helps me broaden my horizons. It might be the same for you. 👽

Details:
  • As of last year, Sci-Fi Summer is now a month long readathon! June 1st at 12:00 am CDT to June 30th 11:59 pm CDT (adjust your time zone accordingly...there's a time zone converter in the sidebar menu).
  • Since science fiction is a very specific genre, this will be strictly reading science fiction during the event. However, since fantasy is so closely related to the genre (often grouped together), if you feel more comfortable reading fantasy, that is also fine.
  • to check in on social media, our new hashtag is #SciFiJune
  • as usual, you do not have to have a blog to participate...feel free to link up and check in from Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Also, we have our Facebook and Goodreads groups, and we're on Instagram
  • As always, please refer to the Guidelines page (link also in the sidebar menu) if you have any questions. For any newbies, there are specific guidelines we use for wrapping up and the giveaway. You can always contact me via the contact me tab if you have any questions.
  • Grab a button! You can get it from the sidebar using the handy grab code, or save the image to your computer to share.
I'm not sure I will be able to procure any prize donations this time, but I will offer a couple of small prizes myself. If anyone would like to donate a prize, just let me know.

That's it! Any questions? Leave a comment, or contact me via the tab in the sidebar menu.

Spring into Horror #Readathon - At an end #SpringHorror

Well, that went by fast! Despite being in lockdown, and not knowing what day it is half the time, I'm actually really surprised how quickly the month passed.

So, how did it go? Did you get a lot of scary reading in, or did you mix it up between scary and more tame fare? I read a really good one...The Descent by Jeff Long. Highly recommended!

Thanks so much for joining me for another readathon. Stay tuned because SciFi Summer is coming up in June (now a month long too). I'll have the sign-up post ready hopefully some time next week.

I'm including the prizes I'm offering as host again below. Be sure to follow the directions so you'll have a chance to win. The form for wrap-ups is also below.

See you next time!

This giveaway is open internationally. Note: I will not donate to any organization that does not believe that all are equal, regardless of gender, race or sexual orientation.

Winner's choice of any book title from the bargain books (these are generally used books) section of Better World Books. They ship internationally (priced at $3.98 or less) OR a $3.00 Amazon eGift card.

Giveaway Details
This is a readathon participant only giveaway. To be eligible, you must have signed up, participated and added a link to the official readathon wrap-up post (I will give everyone until Tuesday, May 5th at 11:59 pm CST to complete their wrap-ups). We no longer use a linky for wrap-ups. The Google form (below) is where you will enter your info, your wrap-up link, and answer yes/no on whether you want to win a prize or not. We have a total of 2 prizes. This means there will be 2 winners. I will award prizes on a first come, first served basis. I will draw the 2 winners with random.org and email all 2 at the same time. The first person who emails me back with their choice gets that prize. I will mark off the prizes as they are taken. Winners will be chosen after the wrap-up post deadline (see above).

(If you would like others to visit your wrap-up post, please leave a comment below with the link to your wrap-up, or you can visit participants via the starting line post linky here.)
