Winter's Respite Readathon - Sign Up #WintersRespite

This is the official sign up for the Winter's Respite Readathon. I am sorry I am WAY late this year. The holiday season took over my life and then I've been under the weather since Christmas day.

We start at 12:00 am on January 1 and end at 11:59 pm on January 31. Times are set for the central time zone so adjust your times accordingly (you can use the link to the time zone converter in the sidebar menu). Of course, like most readathons, the books read must be novels or novellas, adult or young adult are fine, and you can read children's books (as long as you do read some novels too). Note: Non-Fiction is also okay! You DO NOT have to participate the entire month. Join in when you can, start in the middle, end early...whatever works best for your schedule. As with all of my readathons, it will be an event of relaxed reading during which we can personally challenge ourselves and whittle away those ever looming TBR piles/shelves/libraries.

Guidelines for the readathon can be found HERE or you can access in the sidebar menu. Any information you need about the readathon can be found there. Please do be sure to check the guidelines to make sure you're following along correctly. There are specific rules regarding signing up and wrapping up, especially in regards to the giveaway. We no longer use a wrap-up linky and we are now just using the Google form for wrap-ups (since I require your wrap-up link there anyway). That way you don't have to do two steps at the end of the readathon. The wrap-up Google form will be on the wrap-up post instead of the prize page. I will have a yes/no so you can let me know if you're opting out of winning a prize. (If you want to visit people who participated, you can do so via the sign-up/starting line linky. I will have a link to it on the wrap-up post).

As is typical, I will not be hosting any mini-challenges. However, if anyone else would like to host a mini-challenge or giveaway, you are more than welcome. I am also looking for prize donations so if anyone would like to contribute, let me know. Authors, this is a great way to promote your book! (Contact me using the contact form link in the sidebar menu).

Our hashtag is #WintersRespite Also, don't forget about our Facebook groupGoodreads group and check out our Instagram. You can access via the link in the sidebar menu.

Sign up in the linky below. You do not have to do a post now, unless you want to help spread the word (much appreciated). If you don't have a blog, use Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, Instagram, YouTube...or any social media. Having a blog is not required. Be sure to grab the button at the top of this post (there's also a grab code below the button in the sidebar).

Mister Linky's Magical Widgets -- Easy-Linky widget will appear right here!

#Christmas Spirit #Readathon - Mid-Event Check-In #CSreadathon

So, how is the festive reading going? The first week was a whirlwind with Thanksgiving and all. I haven't been able to do any Christmas reading, but I'm seeking to remedy that this week and next weekend.

Share your progress in the comments, or a link to your post.

Also, the prize page is live here.

Don't forget, you can keep the Christmas reading going all season long with the Christmas Spirit Reading Challenge, hosted over at my Christmas blog. It runs all the way until January 6th. Would love to have you. Here is my Christmas reading stack for this readathon and the reading challenge. I know I probably won't get to them all, but I like to have choices.

WINNER - MALLORY
Patchwork: A Memoir of Love and Loss by Mary Jo Doig  1 Galley copy - U.S. only

A wife and mother of a grown son and two teen daughters, a woman enjoying her career and life, Mary Jo Doig wants nothing more from life than to live out her days embraced by the deep roots of family, friends, and her community. Tightly wrapped in a life-long protective cocoon, she has no idea how wounded she is—until, on one starless night following the death of a relative, she has a flashback that opens a dark passageway back to her childhood and the horrific secrets buried deep inside her psyche.

Part mystery and part inspirational memoir, Patchwork is the riveting story of one woman who strived to live a life full of love, only to endure tragedies with two of her children and struggles in her marriages—the consequences of a mysterious life-long behavior unnoticed by her family or teachers. Like a needle stitching together a quilt, the memories Mary Jo recovers following her first flashback show her why her early years were threaded with a need to be invisible, as well as a core beliefs that she was vastly different from her peers. Shattered by these revelations, overcome by depression, hopelessness, and a loss of trust in others, Mary Jo embarks on a healing journey through the underground of her life that ultimately leads to transformation.

About the author

Twenty years ago, Mary Jo Doig moved from her beloved rural Catskill Mountain community to Virginia’s Central Shenandoah Valley. In a tiny cabin on a wooded Blue Ridge mountainside, she started to write the stories that she eventually stitched, in patchwork fashion, into her memoir. She also became, in addition to her professional human services career, a life-writing enthusiast who has supported women writing the stories of their lives as an editor, book reviewer, and facilitator of women’s writing workshops.

Her most recent story, “I Can’t Breathe,” was published in Inside and Out: Women’s Truths, Women’s Stories. Her work has also appeared in Kitchen Table Stories, LaJoie magazine, and varied anthologies and periodicals. She writes in solitude near Charolottesville, VA, in her home by a huge window that looks out at the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains. She also enjoys quilting, knitting, cooking, gardening, hiking, and spending time with family and friends, as well as with her three rescue pets, each of whom dream of being an only child.

#FrightFall #Readathon - Wrap up #SomethingWickedFall

Our scary month of reading is now officially over (although I never stop reading scary. lol). As always, it flew by!

I hope everyone enjoyed FrightFall and that you were able to get a lot of reading done. Even if you only got a little reading in, like me, it's still an accomplishment. So, pat yourselves on the back! Not sure what you thought about the pre and post 48 hour readathons, but I'm thinking to forego them next time. It was a bit more work for me. However, I think we will still have a 48 hour kickoff readathon for Castle Macabre's Something Wicked This Fall Comes every year (yes, I plan to continue that event yearly). I'm considering shortening the name to its hashtag incarnation: Something Wicked Fall. What do you think?

Remember, our process has changed for wrap-ups. No more linky for wrap-up posts. Fill out the form below and indicate if you want a chance at a prize by selecting yes or no. Also, double check that your name is listed in the sign up/starting line linky at this post so you will be eligible for the giveaway. You have until Monday, November 5 at 11:59 pm CDT to fill out the form. I will email the winners within a few days following the deadline so keep a look out in your email inbox (or spam folder, just in case) for an email from my truebookaddict gmail account. (Prize page is here)

Looking forward to Thanksgiving week (USA) when we have the Christmas Spirit Readathon for two weeks...November 19 through December 2. Sign ups will go up within the week so stay tuned.

If you write in addition to reading (and if just might be participating in NaNoWriMo), I'm hosting a two month long writeathon over at my writing blog. The event is Sit Down and Write 10. You can check out all the details here.

Once again, thank you for joining me and I hope to see you next time.

(If you would like others to visit your wrap-up post, please leave a comment below with the link to your wrap-up, or you can visit participants via the starting line post linky here.)

#FrightFall #Readathon - Mid-Event Check-In #SomethingWickedFall

A few days late with this check-in...sorry! My sister came into town last week for my big 5-0 birthday weekend (my birthday was Monday) so it was a whirlwind of getting ready for her to come, and then spending as much time visiting as possible. Of course, as luck would have it, I ended up coming down with some weird stomach thing while she was here. Still not back to 100 percent. Blah. Anyway, as you can imagine, my reading suffered, along with other obligations.

Updates:

The prize page is up HERE.

The second and third discussions for Something Wicked This Way Comes will be combined and posted this Sunday, October 21 at Castle Macabre.

Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon is THIS weekend! Sign up here.

Something Wicked This Way Comes movie watch-along, October 27th at 9pm CT/10pm ET. We will interact while watching on the event page here.

Post-Readathon - October 31/November 1

So, how is your reading going? Feel free to add an update in the comments, or link to an update somewhere online. Hope this month of scary reading is really shaping up nicely for you all.

WINNERS - MALLORY,
Child Eater by Tiffany Higgins (writing as Tifanne Messer)  (1 2 print copies - US only)

Plagued by memories of an abnormal childhood, Tabitha devotes her life to chasing the thing that destroyed her life as she knew it. She takes on as many missing children cases as she can, hoping to reunite families so they won't have to suffer as she has. Her mother wants her to "meet a nice boy, settle down and raise a family." Tabitha scoffs at the mere idea. Five year old Alice White is missing. Her room was left in shambles. Nothing about this small town or its haunting woods is normal. Is the "Child Eater" real or merely a story told by parents to keep their children out of the woods. Alice's case strangely parallels the only other missing child case the town has ever reported, but that was thirty years ago. What could they possibly have in common? David Matherson is a local contractor. He just bought a house in town and he and his crew are fixing it up. He wasn't looking to get involved with a woman or with a missing child, but somehow he finds himself in the middle of the mix. Will Tabitha find Alice in time? Can she solve the mystery of the "Child Eater" and bring Alice back home where she belongs?

Tiffany Higgins is an award winning multi genre author of fiction. She’s a wife, mother, and home chef. She loves researching almost as much as she loves writing and has found a way to combine these two loves into her current novel, "Once Upon a Time in Iowa." "I Love the Changing Seasons" won the KART Kids Book List Award for Creative Storytelling in 2013. She also authored two other picture books, an illustrated middle grade chapter book, and a mystery-thriller (under the pen name Tifanne Messer). Tiffany’s love of research and a quest for her own family history led her to her current novel, "Once Upon a Time in Iowa." The characters are based on her own ancestors, who settled in Calhoun township, Iowa in the 1860’s. When she’s not writing, Tiffany enjoys reading from a wide variety of genres, spending time with her family, and cooking. She finds cooking to be therapeutic. #FrightFall #Readathon - Starting line! #SomethingWickedFall

The pre-readathon has come to an end and FrightFall is officially underway! I don't know about you, but I'm excited. I have a ton of scary reads lined up and movies and shows to watch...can I just say "Halloween" and the Netflix series "The Haunting of Hill House"!!!??? Not to mention our read-along of Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes and our watch-along at the end of the month (details just below)!

This year, our FrightFall is part of my Something Wicked this Fall Comes event at Castle Macabre. During the readathon, we are doing a read-along of Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes and a watch-along of the movie on October 27. All the details for the read-along/watch-along can be found here. (I'm also adding a link in the sidebar menu so you can easily access the reading/discussion schedule.)

Remember, the one main "rule" of FrightFall is that you must read ONE scary book (which can be a thriller, mystery, Gothic novel, or similar for those who are faint of heart). The rest of the month? Keep reading scary if you want, or read whichever genre you choose.

I did not get many prize donations this time. I did have a couple of generous authors donate book prizes, and I will be offering a couple of prizes myself. Everyone here knows that we like to make this about the reading anyway. I'll have the prize page posted as soon as I can. Hopefully, by the end of this week. There will be a link in the sidebar menu for easy access. Of course, there's always a chance I might get more prize offers since it is a month long event. We shall see!

Don't forget that you can participate even if you don't have a blog. Just link up with your Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram (and just post your updates from whichever venue you choose) AND don't forget our Facebook group, our Goodreads groupand our Instagram. If you have any questions about updates, etc., feel free to ask. I will post a mid-event check in post around the middle of the month so be sure to stop by and leave progress, or a link, in the comments.

Hashtag across all social media is #FrightFall  Feel free to also use #SomethingWickedFall

The linky below is the same one as the sign up linky. If you do a starting line/goal post, just add your link again, but be sure to put "goal post" beside your name, i.e. Michelle/True Book Addict (goal post). Note: If you're just signing up, you can do it here on this post. It's the same linky.

#FrightFall #Readathon - Time to sign up! #SomethingWickedFall

Fall is here! And yes, I'm really late with this sign-up post. So sorry! October is right around the corner and you know what that means. It will be time for FrightFall! A full month of nothing but scary reading (for me anyway)!

We start at 12:00am central time on October 1st and end at 11:59pm central time on October 31st. (There is now a handy link to a time zone converter in the menu above) I hope you're ready to get your scary on! Guidelines for the readathon can be found HERE or you can access in the sidebar menu. Any information you need about the readathon can be found there. Please do be sure to check the guidelines to make sure you're following along correctly. There are specific rules regarding sign up and wrap up, especially in regards to the giveaway.

This year we're having a pre-readathon on September 29-30 and a post-readathon on October 31 - November 1. These will be 48 hour readathons. No special sign-ups needed for these. If you're participating in FrightFall, you're automatically in (if you want to be).

Just a reminder, I have eliminated the wrap-up linky and we are now just using the Google form for wrap-ups (since I require your wrap-up link there anyway).

Just remember...the one main "rule" of FrightFall is that you must read at least ONE scary book (which can be a thriller, mystery, Gothic novel, or similar for those who are faint of heart). Since we are doing a month long, I hope you will indulge the scary a bit more, but that is entirely up to you. It is all about the reading after all.

Our social media hashtag is #FrightFall and we have our outstanding Facebook group which is the BEST reading community. Of course, I'm biased! Don't forget our our Goodreads groupand our Instagram  (There are also access tabs in the sidebar menu.)

Two orders of business...
  • I am looking for prize donations so if anyone would like to contribute, let me know.
  • Authors, this is a great way to promote your book! Contact me via the contact form in the menu. If you know of an author who might be interested, pass along a message. Thanks!

Sign up in the linky below. Be sure to grab the button at the top of this post (I'll have a grab code in the sidebar soon).
