Sci-Fi Summer 2026 - Mid-Event Check-In

We're midway through! I hope your reading is going well. I managed to finish Freezing Point and Remote Control (audio) and started Fire & Blood over the weekend. My slump is improving!

Our Junteenth three day readathon starts this Friday at 12:00 am eastern through the end of Sunday. I hope you will join us. If you feel so inclined to read books by black sci-fi or fantasy authors over the weekend, here is a Goodreads list of books. I'm planning to read Dawn by Octavia Butler. There will be a post here the day before the event starts.

Some orders of business...

• We normally have a 24-Hr Readathon during each month-long event, but I decided that since Juneteenth is June 19th, I thought we would have a Juneteenth three day readathon, Friday through Sunday. The black community deserves to be celebrated and now it is particularly important. A focus on black fantasy/sci-fi authors would be cool (but not required). Time for a month of science fiction...and fantasy! As always, a shout out to the person who originally inspired this event...Mallory (The Haunted Reading Room), who is also one of our most loyal participants. Here we are at year 11! I can't believe it has already been that many years! I look forward to this readathon every year. I don't read enough science fiction so this helps me broaden my horizons. It might be the same for you. 👽

We start at 12:00 am eastern time on June 1st and end at 11:59 pm eastern time on June 30th. (There is a handy link to a time zone converter in the sidebar menu.) Guidelines for the readathon can be found HERE or you can access in the sidebar menu. Any information you need about our readathons can be found there.

Since science fiction is a very specific genre, this will be strictly reading science fiction during the event. However, since fantasy is so closely related to the genre (often grouped together), if you feel more comfortable reading fantasy, that is also fine.

The first prize is a $15 social justice charity donation ( I was doing this at the beginning of the event, but I have now moved it back to the end of the event). Sci-Fi Summer 2023 - Mid-Event Check-in

How is the sci-fi (fantasy) reading going? On my end, I just finished Subhuman by Michael McBride,and steadily making my way through The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury. Finishing up the first half of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World for our read-along over at Gather Together and Read. Hoping to have the first discussion post up over there tomorrow.

This is a readathon participant only giveaway. To be eligible, you must have signed up, participated and added a link to the official readathon wrap-up post at the end of the readathon (I will give everyone until Friday, July 7th at 11:59 pm EDT to complete their wrap-ups). Sci-Fi Summer Readathon - Make it so! #SciFiJune

Time for a fun month of science fiction reading (or fantasy, if that's your poison)! Once again, I will be attempting to read Dune. 

Don't forget that you can participate even if you don't have a blog. Just link up with your Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram (and just post your updates from whichever venue you choose) AND don't forget to interact with us in our groups on Facebook and Goodreads, Facebook Page, and we're on Instagram! If you have any questions about updates, etc., feel free to ask. I will be posting a mid-event check-in here, and I will do my best to interact across social media.

I'm not sure I will be able to procure any prize donations this time, though I will try. If anyone would like to donate a prize, just let me know. Authors, this is a great way to promote your book(s).

Going forward for every event - My charity donation prize will be awarded at the beginning of the readathon. How that will work is anyone who signs up in the linky AND leaves a comment on the STARTING LINE post (post will be live at midnight on June 1st) will be entered in the draw for the charity prize. You must include your email address in your comment, or send it to me via the contact form (link in sidebar). Prize details are....

I will make a $15 donation to the winner's choice of a social justice organization, such as the ACLU, Boys and Girls Club, Human Rights Campaign, GLAAD, Amnesty International, It Gets Better, Planned Parenthood, or another social justice organization of your choice (food banks, homeless shelters, animal rights/rescue/shelters would also apply), perhaps your local chapter or a local organization. This giveaway is open internationally. Note: I will not donate to any organization that does not believe all are equal, regardless of gender, race or sexual orientation.

I hope you will consider having your donation made to one of these organizations fighting on the front lines of the Black Lives Matter movement (click each link to learn more).

Sci-Fi Summer #Readathon - Engage! #SciFiJune

Time for a fun month of science fiction reading (or fantasy, if that's your poison)! 

Don't forget that you can participate even if you don't have a blog. Just link up with your Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram (and just post your updates from whichever venue you choose) AND don't forget to interact with us in our groups on Facebook and Goodreads, and we're also on Instagram! If you have any questions about updates, etc., feel free to ask. I will be posting a mid-event check-in here, and I will do my best to interact across social media.

I have received a couple of awesome prize donations from a very generous author, and I'll also be offering a couple of prizes, as usual. I'll have the prize page posted by the end of the first week.

It's back! Sci-Fi Summer Read-a-Thon #SciFiSummerJune

I will always owe the inspiration for this event to Mallory (The Haunted Reading Room)...and so, we're back for our second year!

Details:

• Read-a-Thon dates: Thursday, June 1 at 12:00am CDT until Wednesday, June 7 at 11:59pm CDT (adjust your time zone accordingly). We do a different day configuration (rather than starting on a Monday and ending on a Sunday) to go along with the weirdness of Sci-Fi. 👽
• Since Sci-Fi is a very specific genre, this will be strictly reading science fiction during the event. However, since fantasy is so closely related to science fiction, if you feel more comfortable reading fantasy, that is also fine.
• to check in on social media, we'll use hashtag #SciFiSummerJune
• as usual, you do not have to have a blog to participate...feel free to link up and check in from Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter, etc. These days, it seems most of our activity goes on in our Facebook group which I love. 😍 We have a great community over there...and it's not just during readathons. Everyone should feel free to post in there any time. 

As with the Christmas Spirit Readathon, I usually do not secure prize donations, but I will be offering a couple of prizes from me.
