2025 FrightFall Readathon (and Something Wicked Fall) - Spooky season is here!

It's my favorite time of year! 🎃 I hope you guys are ready for the fun!

We start at 12:00 am eastern time on October 1st and end at 11:59 pm eastern time on October 31st. (There is a handy link to a time zone converter in the sidebar menu.) I hope you're ready to get your scary on! Guidelines for the readathon can be found HERE or you can access in the sidebar menu. Any information you need about our readathons can be found there.

The one main "rule" of FrightFall is that you must read at least ONE scary book (which can be a thriller, mystery, Gothic novel, or similar for those who are faint of heart). I hope you will indulge the scary beyond the one book, but that is entirely up to you. It is all about the reading after all.

Giveaways are suspended for now due to financial reasons (though I may bring them back in the future).
There will no longer be a wrap-up deadline since prizes are eliminated...meaning wrap-ups are optional, but it's always nice to see what everyone read.

• We have one 24-Hour readathon during each month-long event. The FrightFall 24-Hour event will be an opposite readathon, meaning we will start at 8:00 pm and end the next night at 8:00 pm. This will be on Saturday, October 4th and will end on Sunday, October 5th. Remember...8:00 pm to 8:00 pm Eastern time. I will be doing most of my updates and check-ins on Discord (invite link to our Discord). Discord is free to join and it would be cool to have some lively chats over there. FrightFall has officially been a part of Something Wicked Fall for eight years now. The event runs September/October over at my horror blog, Castle Macabre. We are doing a read-along of Hell House by Richard Matheson through the end of October. We started September 1st so there's still time to join in. The reading schedule is posted on the event post, linked above and below.

Looking ahead to our Yuletide Spirit Reading Challenge/Readathon, I just wanted to announce that the Yuletide Spirit blog is now The Mystical Lantern. I wanted to change from a year-round Christmas site to a site that encompasses Halloween and Yuletide seasonally. In case you missed it, I recently posted the Save the Date for Something Wicked Fall which starts in September, and the graphic for FrightFall in October is also in the post here. You may notice that our 24-Hour Readathon during FrightFall will be an Opposite Readathon (starting Saturday night at 8:00 pm Eastern and ending Sunday night at 8:00 pm Eastern). Same concept as Dewey's Reverse 24-Hour Readathon. I just didn't want to steal their terminology. Going forward, a few times per year, our 24-Hour events will be Opposite Readathons (unless enough people weigh in that they prefer the Opposite timing...then we may do them all that way 😁).

2025 High Summer Readathon - Mid-Event Check-In

Hope you're getting in some good reading during these mega hot summer days (Northern hemisphere, that is). I haven't had much opportunity to read over the past two weeks. My sons came into town from Tennessee on the 2nd for a ten day visit. I hadn't seen them in person for over two years! We had a ton of fun and I was sad for them going back. It's hard living away from your kids. I struggle with it every day. Anyway, I'm back at reading...currently Mastodon by Steve Stred and Deerskin by Robin McKinley.

How is the sci-fi (or fantasy) reading going? I'm currently reading Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer. Really good. I saw the movie years ago. I'm going to watch it again after I finish the book. I think I'll start Isaac Asimov's Foundation next. Oh, and I'm also reading Slaughterhouse-Five with my book chat group.

2025 Sci-Fi Summer Readathon - Time to sign up!

Time for a month of science fiction...and fantasy! As always, a shout out to the person who originally inspired this event...Mallory (The Haunted Reading Room). It's year 10! ! I look forward to this readathon every year. I don't read enough science fiction so this helps me broaden my horizons. It might be the same for you. 👽

We start at 12:00 am eastern time on June 1st and end at 11:59 pm eastern time on June 30th. (There is a handy link to a time zone converter in the sidebar menu.) I hope you're ready to get your scary on! Guidelines for the readathon can be found HERE or you can access in the sidebar menu. Any information you need about our readathons can be found there.

Since science fiction is a very specific genre, this will be strictly reading science fiction during the event. However, since fantasy is so closely related to the genre (often grouped together), if you feel more comfortable reading fantasy, that is also fine.

2025 Winter's Respite Readathon - We started...I'm late!

Yes, the readathon started at midnight (eastern U.S. time) and yes I'm late. I'm old, what can I say. Half the time if I don't set a reminder...well, this happens. Anyway, let's move on and get some reading done!

Reminders...

• There is a giveaway during every readathon. I offer two prizes. The first prize is a $15 social justice charity donation ( I was doing this at the beginning of the event, but I have now moved it back to the end of the event). The second prize is a $5 Amazon eGift card. Both giveaways are open internationally (for the Amazon gift, wherever Amazon is available). 2025 Winter's Respite Readathon - Sign up!

Sign up is here! Time for a month of reading while the weather is frightful (if you live in a snowy climate) and to hide from the horrors of the world. Nothing better than some comfort reading.

We start at 12:00 am eastern time on February 1st and end at 11:59 pm eastern time on February 28th (There is a handy link to a time zone converter in the sidebar menu.) Guidelines for the readathon can be found HERE or you can access in the sidebar menu. Any information you need about the readathon can be found there. Please do be sure to check the guidelines to make sure you're following along correctly. There are specific rules regarding sign up and wrap up, especially in regards to the giveaway.

2024 Yuletide Spirit Reading Challenge and Readathon - Wrap-up

Happy New Year! Sorry I'm late with this post. We had our family Christmas today and it completely slipped my mind.
