FrightFall Readathon - Mid-Event Check-In

A few days past mid-event. I've been on vacation in Salem, Massachusetts (and Fall River and Sleepy Hollow, NY). Just got home on Monday. The perfect trip for the spooky season, and my birthday was on Friday. A special birthday indeed. If you would like to see photos I took on the trip, visit my Salem (etc.) album here.

So, how is it going with the reading? Let me know your progress, or leave a link, in the comments.

If anyone wants to chat in real time, remember we now have a Discord here. If you haven't joined yet, you can join via the link above as well.

We have some great prizes this time around. Take a look at the prize page here.

Enjoy the rest of the readathon!

In-Ko-Pah Spirit by Wally Runnels

Other books by Wally Runnels on Amazon

Wally Runnels was born in San Diego, raised along the border at his family's ranch (whose original deed was recorded in 1870), and has traveled extensively through Mexico and Latin America. Hanging out on the border between two countries, he's met a lot of unusual people: Hollywood types, Border Patrol Officers, smugglers, professional trackers, and people he won't mention by name.

He'll remind you that no matter how weird a story can get, it'll contain some grain of truth.

Stoker's Wilde by Steven Hopstaken and Melissa Prusi - Paperback, One Winner (US only)

Years before either becomes a literary legend, Bram Stoker and Oscar Wilde must overcome their disdain for one another to battle the Black Bishop, a mysterious madman wielding supernatural forces to bend the British Empire to his will. With the help of a European vampire expert, a spirited actress and an American businessman, our heroes fight werewolves, vampires and the chains of Victorian morality. The action will take them to dark forests in Ireland, through the upper-class London theater world and culminates in an exciting showdown at Stonehenge, where Bram and Oscar must stop a vampire cult from opening the gates of Hell. FLAME TREE PRESS is the new fiction imprint of Flame Tree Publishing. Launched in 2018 the list brings together brilliant new authors and the more established; the award winners, and exciting, original voices.

Castle of Sorrows by Jonathan Janz  - Hardcover, One Winner (US only)

For nearly a century Castle Blackwood lay dormant on the Sorrows, a lonely island in the Pacific. Last summer, the evil that resided within its walls was awakened. Movie music composer Ben Shadeland was lucky to escape the island with his wife and young son, but he'll soon realize that the terror is far from over. Because a godlike beast named Gabriel and the ghosts who live on the Sorrows are hungry for revenge. They will stop at nothing to bring Ben back to Castle Blackwood, and they will strike at those closest to him to fulfill their sinister plans. Accompanied by three federal officers, an L.A. detective, the newly-widowed owner of the island, a professor specializing in the occult, and a voluptuous psychic, Ben must return to the Sorrows in order to save someone he loves. Ben thought he knew what true horror was. But the new visitors have brought with them their own personal ghosts. And the beast of Castle Blackwood won't be sated until it has feasted on the blood of Ben Shadeland and everyone dear to him. FLAME TREE PRESS is the new fiction imprint of Flame Tree Publishing. Launched in 2018 the list brings together brilliant new authors and the more established; the award winners, and exciting, original voices.

Tomb of Gods by Brian Moreland - Paperback, One Winner (US only)

Deep inside the tomb exists a hidden world of wonder and terror... In 1935, British archaeologists vanished inside an Egyptian cave. A year later, one man returned covered in mysterious scars. Egyptologist Imogen Riley desperately wants to know what happened to the ill-fated expedition led by her grandfather. On a quest for answers, she joins a team of archaeologists and soldiers in Egypt. Inside a mountain tomb, they've found a technologically advanced relic and a maze of tunnels. Dr. Nathan Trummel believes this tomb leads to the most guarded secrets of the pharaohs. When the explorers venture deep into the caves, they discover a hidden world of wonder and terror.

Giveaway Details
This is a readathon participant only giveaway. To be eligible, you must have signed up, participated and added a link to the official readathon wrap-up post (I will give everyone until Friday, November 5th at 11:59 pm EDT to complete their wrap-ups). We no longer use a linky for wrap-ups. There will be a Google form on the readathon wrap-up post where you will enter your info, your wrap-up link, and answer yes/no on whether you want to win a prize or not. We have a total of 5 prizes. This means there will be 5 winners. I will award prizes on a first come, first served basis. I will draw the 5 winners with and email all 5 at the same time. The first person who emails me back with their choice gets that prize. I will mark off the prizes as they are taken. Winners will be chosen after the wrap-up post deadline (see above).

FrightFall Readathon - Let's Do This!

It's time! And once again, the readathon is part of Something Wicked Fall at Castle Macabre. We are doing a read-along of The Blood Countess by Andrei Codrescu (we're not that far in, if you want to join us). Not sure at this point about horror movie watch-alongs. I tried to host one this past weekend (Bram Stoker's Dracula), but no one could make it. I'll be in Salem, Massachusetts October 11 - 16 so I'm not going to have a ton of time this month. We'll have to play it by ear. If we do have one, we will chat in our new Discord server (see below).

Remember, the one main "rule" of FrightFall is that you must read ONE scary book (which can be a thriller, mystery, Gothic novel, or similar for those who are faint of heart). The rest of the month? Keep reading scary if you want, or read whichever genre you choose.

I did receive a prize donation from a regular author contributor (thank you very much to him!). I will be offering my usual couple of prizes (see below to enter the charity donation prize). Plus, this year, I'll be giving away two horror novels. I will post the prize page by the end of the first week.

Don't forget that you can participate even if you don't have a blog. Just link up with your Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram (and just post your updates from whichever venue you choose) AND don't forget our Facebook group, Facebook Page, our Goodreads group, and our Instagram. If you have any questions about updates, etc., feel free to ask. I will post a mid-event check in post mid-month so be sure to stop by and leave progress, or a link, in the comments.

Hashtag across all social media is #FrightFall Feel free to also use #Readathon and #SomethingWickedFall

The linky below is the same one as the sign up linky. If you do a starting line/goal post, just add your link again, but be sure to put "goal post" beside your name, i.e. Michelle/True Book Addict (goal post). Note: If you're just signing up, you can do it here on this post. It's the same linky.

I have created a Discord server for Seasons of Reading...sort of an experiment away from Slack, which I feel is too business-y for our purposes. You can pop in and chat during our events at any time, or even outside of events. We will also chat there during our horror movie watch-alongs (as mentioned above). We will not be doing live chats, just typing in the text channels. I will create a FrightFall channel as well. Here's the invite link:

Win a $15 donation to a social justice charity of your choice!

I will make a $15 donation to the winner's choice of a social justice organization, such as the ACLU, Boys and Girls Club, Human Rights Campaign, GLAAD, Amnesty International, It Gets Better, The Trevor Project, Planned Parenthood, or another social justice organization of your choice (food banks, homeless shelters, animal rights/rescue/shelters would also apply), perhaps your local chapter or a local organization. This giveaway is open internationally. Note: I will not donate to any organization that does not believe all are equal, regardless of gender, race or sexual orientation.

Charity giveaway (Google form):

(I will draw the winner at the end of the first week)
