Winter's Respite Readathon--Sign Up Here! #WintersRespite

This is the official sign up for the Winter's Respite Readathon! All our regular seasonal readathons are now a month long so Winter's Respite runs for the entire month of January. Woot! So, we start at 12:00 am on January 1 and end at 11:59 pm on January 31. Times are set for the central time zone so adjust your times accordingly (you can use the link to the time zone converter in the sidebar menu). Of course, like most readathons, the books read must be novels or novellas, adult or young adult are fine, and you can read children's books (as long as you do read some novels too). Note: Non-Fiction is also okay! You DO NOT have to participate the entire month. Join in when you can, start in the middle, end early...whatever works best for your schedule. As with all of my readathons, it will be an event of relaxed reading during which we can personally challenge ourselves and whittle away those ever looming TBR piles/shelves/libraries.

Guidelines for the readathon can be found HERE or you can access in the sidebar menu. Any information you need about the readathon can be found there. Please do be sure to check the guidelines to make sure you're following along correctly. There are specific rules regarding signing up and wrapping up, especially in regards to the giveaway. Also, regarding the giveaway, I'll be again adding a Google form to capture names and email addresses so if you're interested in winning a prize (and you've met the sign up and wrap up criteria), I will ask you to fill in that form which will be located on the prize page. The form will now have a required field for you to enter the link to your wrap-up post.

As is typical, I will not be hosting any mini-challenges. However, if anyone else would like to host a mini-challenge or giveaway, you are more than welcome. I am also looking for prize donations so if anyone would like to contribute, let me know. Authors, this is a great way to promote your book! (Contact me using the contact form link in the sidebar menu).

Our hashtag is #WintersRespite Also, don't forget about our Facebook group. You can access via the link in the sidebar menu.

Sign up in the linky below. You do not have to do a post now, unless you want to help spread the word (much appreciated). If you don't have a blog, use Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, Instagram, YouTube...or any social media. Having a blog is not required. Be sure to grab the button at the top of this post (there's also a grab code below the button in the sidebar).

Christmas Spirit (Christmas & Scary) #Readathon is at an end #CSReadathon

It seems our readathon has come to an end. I hope everyone was able to get in some good holiday...and scary...reading. I liked this added element this year. I hope you did too. I will probably continue the tradition next year.

If you are interested in putting your name in the hat to win the book prizes from Rhonda Hopkins (mentioned in the mid-event check in post here), please complete your wrap-up, link it up in the linky below, and leave a comment on this post (don't forget your email address so I can contact the winners). Good luck!

If you are still in a festive reading mood, the Christmas Spirit Reading Challenge hosted at my Christmas blog continues through January 6th (Twelfth Night). You can still sign up and participate, even up until the last week.

Sign up for January's Winter's Respite Readathon will be posted tomorrow so be sure to sign up. With our new format, it's going to be a month long. There is just something about reading in the winter, isn't there?

Thanks for joining me for another readathon! See you next time.

#CSReadathon (Christmas and Scary) It's mid-event...and prize update! #Readathon

Just wanted to do a quick mid-event (a little past) check in. How are you doing? I haven't been doing too hot, but we still have almost a week so hopefully I'll get more reading in. I did listen to Hercule Poirot's Christmas on audio and I finished another book I've been reading for review, which I highly recommend...The Murderer's Maid by Erika Mailman.

News about prizes

Today is Giving Tuesday so I've decided to go ahead and pick a winner for my charity prize of a donation to an organization dedicated to helping those in need. For instance, Second Harvest Food Bank, Salvation Army, Heifer International, etc. I'm making a $20 donation in the winner's name, and since most charities are doubling (or tripling) donations today, that will be a $40 to $60 donation! I will draw from the sign up/starting line list (and, of course, double check participation). Be watching your email, Twitter and/or the Facebook group to see if you're a winner.

Rhonda Hopkins has generously donated an eBook copy and an audio copy of her books, Survival and The Gift. That's four winners! I will draw for these prizes at the end of the readathon.

Some days, the only plan is survival…

When Sarah escapes from her brutal abductors, she promises to return to rescue her twin sister, but with the walking dead invading Fort Worth, TX, she is forced to rely on a competitive coworker who made her work life hell for years. With her coworker weakened by cancer treatments, her sister still imprisoned, and zombies looking for an easy meal, Sarah’s only plan, if she can pull it off, is Survival.

SURVIVAL is a 14,000 word short story.

Excerpt:

Sarah Jamison's gaze met her twin's fear-filled blue eyes. "I—"

"It's no use. The cuff is too tight. You're going to have to leave me." Dana put her free hand on Sarah's, stilling their frantic motions.

"No. I won't leave you. Maybe I can . . ." She turned, taking in the empty basement—the cement walls, exposed pipes, and her sister handcuffed to one of the metal cylinders. A small amount of light trickled in through the one lone window, but there was nothing she could use as a weapon. Unless...

She strode over to the dangling pipe from which she had managed to extricate herself earlier. Grabbing the unattached end, she tried wresting it clear of its fittings, her own wrist dangling handcuffs which clinked against the metal with each pull. Rust and time made it impossible to remove.

"Sarah—"

"No." Tears ran down her face. "I can't leave you, Dana."

"You have to. It's the only way we're both getting out of here. You have to go for help."

Sarah knelt beside her sister who reached out and wiped her thumb across her cheek, brushing the tears aside.

"I'll be okay until you get back. I won't give them any excuse to throw me out to those . . . ." Dana choked back the word they had both been avoiding, choosing another instead. "Creatures."

Sometimes, the best gifts are unexpected…

When workaholic Robert Chalmer’s wife leaves to take care of her sick mother for two weeks, he is left with all the responsibility… including his seven-year-old daughter. With Christmas fast approaching, Robert must find a way to reconnect with what is most important in his life, or risk losing it forever.

THE GIFT is a 7300 word heart-warming short story set in Fort Worth, TX about family, love, and second chances.

About the author
Best-selling and award-winning author, Rhonda Hopkins, has learned firsthand that truth is stranger than fiction. I hope everyone is enjoying the readathon! Be watching because the sign up for Winter's Respite Readathon, now all month long in January, will be posted this week.

Christmas Spirit 2017 (Christmas & Scary) #Readathon - Sign up! #CSReadathon

We are once again kicking off the Christmas Spirit Reading Challenge over at Christmas Spirit, with the annual Christmas Spirit Read-a-Thon...and it's now two weeks long!

The Christmas Spirit Readathon has a twist this year! It's a Christmas and Scary Readathon. Personally, I read scary (horror) books all year round, but I know many people reserve that kind of reading to October. But that's just ONE month! So, I decided to create this twist to give people the excuse to read scary for at least a couple more weeks (if no more!).

What does this mean? Well, you can read Christmas, or you can read scary, or you can read both. For example, A Christmas Carol could also be labeled as scary/spooky because of the ghosts. Dickens also wrote other spooky Christmas tales (check his "Christmas Books"). However, don't think your scary has to have a Christmas theme. You can read non-holiday scary, or you can read a Christmas themed mystery (which can sometimes be scary), or you can choose all Christmas books. It's entirely up to you!

Details:
  • Read-a-Thon dates: Monday, November 20 at 12:00am CDT until Sunday, December 3 at 11:59pm CDT (adjust your time zone accordingly...there's a time zone converter in the blog menu)
  • You do not have to be signed up for the Christmas Spirit Reading Challenge to participate (but I sure would love for you to join us!)
  • I am not requiring that you read only Christmas/holiday books during the read-a-thon, but I hope you will pick up at least one holiday tale, even if it's just to read some children's books with your kids or some holiday short stories...and perhaps some scary fare...
  • to check in on social media, we'll use hashtag #CSreadathon
  • as usual, you do not have to have a blog to participate...feel free to link up and check in from Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, etc. AND interact with us in our Facebook group.

If you're interested in joining us for the Christmas Spirit Reading Challenge, which runs all season long, you can do so at my Christmas blog, Christmas Spirit. Would love to have you!

Readathon prize:

Since it's the Season of Giving, our prize this year will be a donation to an organization dedicated to helping those in need. For instance, Second Harvest Food Bank, Salvation Army, Heifer International, etc. I will make a $20 donation in the winner's name. This is open internationally.

Hope I haven't forgotten anything. If you have any questions or notice something I've left out, please feel free to contact me via the sidebar menu.

Time to wrap up the #FrightFall #Readathon

Where did the time go? We have come to the end of FrightFall! I hope everyone enjoyed the readathon. Just remember...enjoyment is the topmost goal. If you didn't meet your goals, don't sweat it.

I'd like to thank you all for joining me. Be sure to add your wrap-up link below and please double check that your name is listed in the sign up/starting line linky at this post so you will be eligible for the giveaway. You will also need to fill out the form on the prize page if you would like to win a prize. You have until Sunday, November 5 at 11:59 pm central time to add your wrap-up link and to fill out the form on the prize page. I will draw giveaway winners in the following few days after the wrap-up deadline so keep a look out in your email inbox (or spam folder, just in case) for an email from truebookaddict. (Please be sure to note the system of drawing winners in the giveaway details on the prize page).

Now let's have a big round of applause for the authors, and for Sinister Grin Press, who so generously donated our prizes. Bravo...and thank you!

Also, thank you to Steven Karalash for helping me with the cheerleading duties. And really, everyone who interacts in our Facebook group...you all rock!

Now on to upcoming events and news...

I put up a poll in the Facebook group regarding making all four of the seasonal readathons a month long. I have to say, I really like the month long format. It's so low key...no pressure. Not surprisingly, the majority of voters chose "Yes," followed closely by "fine either way." (If you would like to view the poll, click here. You may need to have a Facebook account to see it. I'm not sure).

So, with that consensus, January's Winter's Respite, April's Spring into Horror, July's High Summer, and of course, October's FrightFall will all have the month long format. Woot! Also, you will see below that the Christmas Spirit Readathon is now two weeks and so SciFi Summer in June will also now be two weeks long.

The Christmas Spirit Readathon is going to have a twist this year! It's going to be a Christmas and Scary Readathon. What does that mean? Well, you can read Christmas, or you can read scary, or you can read both. For example, A Christmas Carol could also be labeled as scary/spooky because of the ghosts. Dickens also wrote other spooky Christmas tales (check his "Christmas Books"). However, don't think your scary has to have a Christmas theme. You can read non-holiday scary, or you can read a Christmas themed mystery (which can sometimes be scary), or you can choose all Christmas books. It's entirely up to you! I will have sign ups for the readathon and the Christmas Spirit Reading Challenge (hosted at my Christmas blog, Christmas Spirit) posted by next week...hopefully.

Well, that's it! Thanks again for joining us. Will be seeing you next time!

#FrightFall #Readathon - Mid-Event Check-In

Are we really at mid-event already!? I've been interacting in the Facebook group and I know Steven Karalash (Mystery Night Owl) has been helping me with some cheerleading. Thank you, sir! I have not had much of a chance to visit many blogs. I crammed my work into the early part of the week last week so I wouldn't have to do any work on the weekend, which was my birthday weekend. I had a fun time celebrating this weekend, but it took away from visiting blogs and reading too (for the most part). Honestly though, I don't think I'm doing too shabbily this time...and I'm enjoying all the scary reads. And look what my mom got me for my birthday! Although unfortunately, I won't be able to pick the book up to read until next month (hopefully).

I hope everyone is getting lots of good reading in. I think this month long format is smashing. I'm halfway tempted to make all my seasonal readathons a month long. Would that be excessive? lol

Don't forget to check out the prize page. There are probably going to be some additions to the prizes so stay tuned on that.

Share your updates in the comments, or leave a link to your update post on your blog or social media.

Happy continued FrightFall reading!

#FrightFall #Readathon - #Prizes

This is the giveaway/prize promotion page for all the prizes being given away for readathon participants. We have some amazing book prizes donated by two very generous authors, and myself! At the end of this post, you will find details regarding how the prizes will be awarded at the conclusion of the readathon. You will also find the form to fill out if you're interested in winning a prize.

Note: The fine authors who so generously donated books would greatly appreciate a review, if you win, on your blog and/or on Goodreads and Amazon. Thank you!

Catharsis by Noorilhuda  (One paperback - International)

BOOK SYNOPSIS:
Ten year old Daniel has been missing for more than a week.  His family and the police have all but lost hope of finding him alive. Then a strange old man enters the precinct at the 99th Avenue and declares he knows where the boy is - and who he’s with. The lead detective on the case, Aurora Fox, is skeptical. Is the hemophiliac puppet master, Maxwell Caine, part of the puzzle or the solution - and why does he look so dolled up?

Dark tale of a tough-as-nails detective, a curious old man and a persistent district attorney - all trying to catch a pedophile..........a serial killer.

Fear is relative.
What would you do to be free?

Writing this book was a terrifying, isolating and entirely intrusive experience - reading it won't be any different.

The reviews have been mixed, negative at best, but it would be great to have as much feedback as possible as to the story, characters and how it makes you feel.

WINNERS - ZOE, LENI
One Two winners - Kindle or PDF - International
Two winners will receive Breathe. Breathe., a mixed fiction collection of dark poetry and short stories, recently published by author Erin Al-Mehairi, garnering a Top 2 spot on Amazon's Best Selling Hot New Releases chart in women's poetry and a Top 20 in horror short stories, both places in which she is still trending. This one has deep soul and courage.

Breathe. Breathe. is a collection of dark poetry and short fiction that explores the deepest parts of the soul. It’s a representation of how life can break us apart and words can heal us. Deep, dark emotions are purged onto the pages awaiting you, urging you to get lost at sea and in the deep, dark woods of your mind. There is a fine line between breathing and death.

In Act One, readers are presented with a serial killer in Victorian London, a Lighthouse Keeper with an eerie legacy, a murderous spouse that seems to have walked right out of a mystery novel, and a treacherous Japanese lady who wants to stay immortal. The heightened fears in the twilight of our minds seep into the blackest of our nights, where we have to breathe in rhythm to stay alive.

In Act Two, the poetry turns more internal and pierces through the wall of denial and pain, bringing visceral emotions to the surface unleashing traumas such as domestic abuse, violence, and illness.

In the short stories, you’ll meet residents of Valhalla Lane whose lives are on a parallel track to collision, a man who is driven mad by the sound of a woodpecker, a teenage girl who wakes up on the beach and can’t find another soul in sight, a woman caught in a time shift pitting her up against the Egyptian goddess Anuket, and a little girl whose whole world changes when her favorite crayon color is discontinued.

Throughout the collection of dark poetry and fiction, readers will be haunted by themes of oppression, isolation, revenge, and madness told through folklore, nightmares, and often times raw, impulsive emotion.

With a foreword by the Bram Stoker Nominated author Brian Kirk, Breathe. Breathe. will at times unsettle you, at times embrace you. Erin Sweet Al-Mehairi, a veteran writer and editor of the written word, offers up a mixed set of pieces, identifying her as a strong, new voice in dark fiction that will tear out your heart, but then remind you to breathe.

Available now on Amazon in paperback and for kindle, Kobo, and more to come.

#FrightFall #Readathon - Let's get this month of scary underway!

And off we go...into the spooky forest! I'm SO ready for this. How about you?

Remember, the one main "rule" of FrightFall is that you must read ONE scary book (which can be a thriller, mystery, Gothic novel, or similar for those who are faint of heart). The rest of the month? Keep reading scary if you want, or read whichever genre you choose.

Oddly enough, I did not get many prize donations this time. I did have a couple of generous authors donate book prizes, and I will be offering a couple of prizes myself. Everyone here knows that we like to make this about the reading anyway. I'll have the prize page posted by the end of this week. There will be a tab at the top of the blog for easy access.

Don't forget that you can participate even if you don't have a blog. Just link up with your Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram (and just post your updates from whichever venue you choose) AND don't forget to interact in our Facebook group! If you have any questions about updates, etc., feel free to ask. I will be posting weekly check-ins on Saturdays so be sure to stop by and leave progress, or a link, in the comments of those posts.

I had asked for volunteers to help me with cheerleading duties. Steven has awesomely volunteered. If anyone else would like to, please send me a message via the contact form, or leave a comment with your email address.

Social media hashtag across all platforms - #FrightFall

If you have any questions about how things work, check out the guidelines tab above or the sign up post, or you can always leave me a comment. The linky below is the same one as the sign up linky. If you do a starting line/goal post, just add your link again, but be sure to put "goal post" beside your name, i.e. Michelle/True Book Addict (goal post). Note: If you're just signing up, you can do it here on this post. It's the same linky. Sign-ups are open through Friday, October 27 at 11:59pm CDT.

#FrightFall #Readathon - Sign up!

Fall will be here before we know it, then right around the corner is October and you know what that means. It will be time for FrightFall! I'm so excited that we are now doing the whole month of October. What could be better than a month long readathon? Not much, in my humble opinion.

We start at 12:00am central time on October 1st and end at 11:59pm central time on October 31st. (There is now a handy link to a time zone converter in the menu above) I hope you're ready to get your scary on! Guidelines for the readathon can be found HERE or you can access in the tab at the top of the blog. Any information you need about the readathon can be found there. Please do be sure to check the guidelines to make sure you're following along correctly. There are specific rules regarding sign up and wrap up, especially in regards to the giveaway. Also, regarding the giveaway, I'll be again adding a Google form to capture names and email addresses so if you're interested in winning a prize (you still must meet the sign up and wrap up criteria), I will ask you to fill in that form which will be located on the prize page.

Just remember...the one main "rule" of FrightFall is that you must read at least ONE scary book (which can be a thriller, mystery, Gothic novel, or similar for those who are faint of heart). Since we are doing a month long, I hope you will indulge the scary a bit more, but that is entirely up to you. It is all about the reading after all.

Our social media hashtag is #FrightFall and we have our outstanding Facebook group which has become quite the reading community (there is also an access tab in the menu).

Two orders of business...

I am looking for prize donations so if anyone would like to contribute, let me know.
Authors, this is a great way to promote your book! Contact me via the contact form in the menu.

I'm also looking for cheerleaders to help me with hosting duties in regards to visiting and commenting on posts, interacting in the Facebook group and/or on other social media such as Twitter, Instagram, etc. Send me a message via the contact form in the menu if you're interested in helping. Thanks in advance!

Sign up in the linky below. Be sure to grab the button at the top of this post (there's also a grab code below the button in the sidebar).

Note: After the linky, I've listed more fall events I'm hosting that you may want to join me for. No pressure!

Time to close out the High Summer Readathon #HSreadathon

High Summer is at an end. I hope everyone enjoyed the two weeks and, for those who participated, the 48 hour Christmas in July portion at the end. I think we will do that again next year. What do you think? If you didn't meet your goals, don't sweat it. Having fun is the most important thing. 😁

I'd like to thank you all for joining me. Be sure to add your wrap-up link below and please double check that your name is listed in the sign up/starting line linky at this post so you will be eligible for the giveaway. You will also need to fill out the form on the prize page if you would like to win a prize. You have until Wednesday, August 2 at 11:59pm central time to add your wrap-up link and to fill out the form on the prize page. I will draw giveaway winners in the following few days after the wrap-up deadline so keep a look out in your email inbox (or spam folder, just in case) for an email from truebookaddict. (Please be sure to note the system of drawing winners in the giveaway details on the prize page).

Now let's have a big round of applause for the authors who so generously donated our prizes. Bravo...and thank you!

Hope to see you next time at the MONTH LONG FrightFall Readathon, coming in October! The button is all ready to go! You can grab the code in the sidebar. As I mentioned previously, I'm going to ask for some help on future readathons by recruiting cheerleaders. If you're not familiar with the term, it basically means you visit participant's posts on their blogs, social media, in our Facebook group, and post words of welcome, encouragement and support. I've discovered that I'm having trouble keeping up on my own. I will do a call out post in early to mid-September on the blog so people can sign up/express interest...and I'll explain how it will work...once I figure out how I want it to work, schedule-wise.

I also wanted to remind you of my upcoming Fall events at my other blogs. In September, during Banned Books Week, I do a week long series of posts. I'm not sure what my direction will be this year, but I do it every year and I don't plan to stop. That will be at my main blog, True Book Addict. At my horror blog, Castle Macabre I will once again be hosting Gothic September  and then Season of the Witch in October. At Gather Together and Read, where the Never-Ending Anne Rice reading challenge is hosted, I will be hosting a read-along of The Mummy in October, in anticipation of the new book (the sequel, Ramses the Damned: The Passion of Cleopatra) coming out in November (written by Rice and her son, Christopher Rice).

Lots of exciting doings coming this Fall. Fall and Winter are my favorite seasons!

Thank you so much for joining me for the readathon. Good luck in the giveaway to all!

48 Hour Christmas in July #Readathon starts now! #HSreadathon

It's time! Gather your Christmas book stack and get ready for some holiday cheer in the middle of this hot, hot summer. I'll tell you...I'm dreaming about snow right about now. I'm a winter girl, I'm not afraid to admit. ⛄

Remember, you don't have to read Christmas books. You can continue on with what you've been reading. A fun idea...if you want to challenge yourself to see how much you can read in the 48 hours.

You do not have to sign up again. This is just a little segue into some different reading during basically the same readathon. lol That might have sounded a bit confusing.

You can also use #ChristmasinJuly on social media in addition to #HSreadathon. This will run midnight central time (7/29) through Sunday 7/30 at 11:59 pm central time. (Use the time zone converter up in the menu if you need to)

Enjoy!
