#FrightFall #Readathon - Wrap up #SomethingWickedFall

Our scary month of reading is now officially over (although I never stop reading scary. lol). As always, it flew by!

I hope everyone enjoyed FrightFall and that you were able to get a lot of reading done. Even if you only got a little reading in, like me, it's still an accomplishment. So, pat yourselves on the back! Not sure what you thought about the pre and post 48 hour readathons, but I'm thinking to forego them next time. It was a bit more work for me. However, I think we will still have a 48 hour kickoff readathon for Castle Macabre's Something Wicked This Fall Comes every year (yes, I plan to continue that event yearly). I'm considering shortening the name to its hashtag incarnation: Something Wicked Fall. What do you think?

Remember, our process has changed for wrap-ups. No more linky for wrap-up posts. Fill out the form below and indicate if you want a chance at a prize by selecting yes or no. Also, double check that your name is listed in the sign up/starting line linky at this post so you will be eligible for the giveaway. You have until Monday, November 5 at 11:59 pm CDT to fill out the form. I will email the winners within a few days following the deadline so keep a look out in your email inbox (or spam folder, just in case) for an email from my truebookaddict gmail account. (Prize page is here)

Looking forward to Thanksgiving week (USA) when we have the Christmas Spirit Readathon for two weeks...November 19 through December 2. Sign ups will go up within the week so stay tuned.

If you write in addition to reading (and if just might be participating in NaNoWriMo), I'm hosting a two month long writeathon over at my writing blog. The event is Sit Down and Write 10. You can check out all the details here.

Once again, thank you for joining me and I hope to see you next time.

(If you would like others to visit your wrap-up post, please leave a comment below with the link to your wrap-up, or you can visit participants via the starting line post linky here.)

#FrightFall #Readathon - Mid-Event Check-In #SomethingWickedFall

A few days late with this check-in...sorry! My sister came into town last week for my big 5-0 birthday weekend (my birthday was Monday) so it was a whirlwind of getting ready for her to come, and then spending as much time visiting as possible. Of course, as luck would have it, I ended up coming down with some weird stomach thing while she was here. Still not back to 100 percent. Blah. Anyway, as you can imagine, my reading suffered, along with other obligations.

Updates:

The prize page is up HERE.

The second and third discussions for Something Wicked This Way Comes will be combined and posted this Sunday, October 21 at Castle Macabre.

Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon is THIS weekend! Sign up here.

Something Wicked This Way Comes movie watch-along, October 27th at 9pm CT/10pm ET. We will interact while watching on the event page here.

Post-Readathon - October 31/November 1

So, how is your reading going? Feel free to add an update in the comments, or link to an update somewhere online. Hope this month of scary reading is really shaping up nicely for you all.

Rattus New Yorkus by Hunter Shea  (One eBook - International)

Add some screams and squirms to your Halloween season with Rattus New Yorkus!

THEY’RE BIGGER
Deep in the sewers of New York City, the rat population is growing. Dr. Randolph Finch is determined to break the cycle. His new rodenticide, Degenesis, doesn’t kill rats. It sterilizes them from reproducing. But nothing adapts faster than a New York rat . . .
THEY’RE SMARTER
City exterminators and soon-to-be divorced Chris and Benita Jackson think they know how these rats think. They know how rats breed. And they fear that Degenesis has only made these rats stronger. More aggressive. More intelligent. And more ravenous than ever . . .
TONIGHT’S DINNER SPECIAL: US
After a noticeable surge in rat den activity, the Jacksons witness something strange. Without warning, the rats disappear—only to reassemble in a massive lair beneath Grand Central Station. Millions upon millions of them. Working together. Operating as a hive mind. Feasting on the flesh of the homeless below—and planning their all-out attack on the unsuspecting humans above . . .

Child Eater by Tiffany Higgins (writing as Tifanne Messer)  (2 print copies - US only)

Plagued by memories of an abnormal childhood, Tabitha devotes her life to chasing the thing that destroyed her life as she knew it. She takes on as many missing children cases as she can, hoping to reunite families so they won't have to suffer as she has. Her mother wants her to "meet a nice boy, settle down and raise a family." Tabitha scoffs at the mere idea. Five year old Alice White is missing. Her room was left in shambles. Nothing about this small town or its haunting woods is normal. Is the "Child Eater" real or merely a story told by parents to keep their children out of the woods. Alice's case strangely parallels the only other missing child case the town has ever reported, but that was thirty years ago. What could they possibly have in common? David Matherson is a local contractor. He just bought a house in town and he and his crew are fixing it up. He wasn't looking to get involved with a woman or with a missing child, but somehow he finds himself in the middle of the mix. Will Tabitha find Alice in time? Can she solve the mystery of the "Child Eater" and bring Alice back home where she belongs?

Author bio:

Tiffany Higgins is an award winning multi genre author of fiction. She’s a wife, mother, and home chef. She loves researching almost as much as she loves writing and has found a way to combine these two loves into her current novel, "Once Upon a Time in Iowa." "I Love the Changing Seasons" won the KART Kids Book List Award for Creative Storytelling in 2013. She also authored two other picture books, an illustrated middle grade chapter book, and a mystery-thriller (under the pen name Tifanne Messer). Tiffany’s love of research and a quest for her own family history led her to her current novel, "Once Upon a Time in Iowa." The characters are based on her own ancestors, who settled in Calhoun township, Iowa in the 1860’s. When she’s not writing, Tiffany enjoys reading from a wide variety of genres, spending time with her family, and cooking. She finds cooking to be therapeutic. She especially loves creating new recipes for her family.

#FrightFall #Readathon - Starting line! #SomethingWickedFall

The pre-readathon has come to an end and FrightFall is officially underway! I don't know about you, but I'm excited. I have a ton of scary reads lined up and movies and shows to watch...can I just say "Halloween" and the Netflix series "The Haunting of Hill House"!!!??? Not to mention our read-along of Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes and our watch-along at the end of the month (details just below)!

This year, our FrightFall is part of my Something Wicked this Fall Comes event at Castle Macabre. During the readathon, we are doing a read-along of Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes and a watch-along of the movie on October 27. All the details for the read-along/watch-along can be found here. (I'm also adding a link in the sidebar menu so you can easily access the reading/discussion schedule.)

Remember, the one main "rule" of FrightFall is that you must read ONE scary book (which can be a thriller, mystery, Gothic novel, or similar for those who are faint of heart). The rest of the month? Keep reading scary if you want, or read whichever genre you choose.

I did not get many prize donations this time. I did have a couple of generous authors donate book prizes, and I will be offering a couple of prizes myself. Everyone here knows that we like to make this about the reading anyway. I'll have the prize page posted as soon as I can. Hopefully, by the end of this week. There will be a link in the sidebar menu for easy access. Of course, there's always a chance I might get more prize offers since it is a month long event. We shall see!

Don't forget that you can participate even if you don't have a blog. Just link up with your Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram (and just post your updates from whichever venue you choose) AND don't forget our Facebook group, our Goodreads groupand our Instagram. If you have any questions about updates, etc., feel free to ask. I will post a mid-event check in post around the middle of the month so be sure to stop by and leave progress, or a link, in the comments.

Hashtag across all social media is #FrightFall  Feel free to also use #SomethingWickedFall

The linky below is the same one as the sign up linky. If you do a starting line/goal post, just add your link again, but be sure to put "goal post" beside your name, i.e. Michelle/True Book Addict (goal post). Note: If you're just signing up, you can do it here on this post. It's the same linky.

#FrightFall #Readathon - Time to sign up! #SomethingWickedFall

Fall is here! And yes, I'm really late with this sign-up post. So sorry! October is right around the corner and you know what that means. It will be time for FrightFall! A full month of nothing but scary reading (for me anyway)!

We start at 12:00am central time on October 1st and end at 11:59pm central time on October 31st. (There is now a handy link to a time zone converter in the menu above) I hope you're ready to get your scary on! Guidelines for the readathon can be found HERE or you can access in the sidebar menu. Any information you need about the readathon can be found there. Please do be sure to check the guidelines to make sure you're following along correctly. There are specific rules regarding sign up and wrap up, especially in regards to the giveaway.

This year we're having a pre-readathon on September 29-30 and a post-readathon on October 31 - November 1. These will be 48 hour readathons. No special sign-ups needed for these. If you're participating in FrightFall, you're automatically in (if you want to be).

Just a reminder, I have eliminated the wrap-up linky and we are now just using the Google form for wrap-ups (since I require your wrap-up link there anyway). That way you don't have to do two steps at the end of the readathon. The wrap-up Google form will be on the wrap-up post instead of the prize page. I will have a yes/no so you can let me know if you're opting out of winning a prize. (If you want to visit people who participated, you can do so via the sign-up/starting line linky. I will have a link to it on the wrap-up post).

Just remember...the one main "rule" of FrightFall is that you must read at least ONE scary book (which can be a thriller, mystery, Gothic novel, or similar for those who are faint of heart). Since we are doing a month long, I hope you will indulge the scary a bit more, but that is entirely up to you. It is all about the reading after all.

Our social media hashtag is #FrightFall and we have our outstanding Facebook group which is the BEST reading community. Of course, I'm biased! Don't forget our our Goodreads groupand our Instagram  (There are also access tabs in the sidebar menu.)

Two orders of business...
  • I am looking for prize donations so if anyone would like to contribute, let me know.
  • Authors, this is a great way to promote your book! Contact me via the contact form in the menu. If you know of an author who might be interested, pass along a message. Thanks!

Sign up in the linky below. Be sure to grab the button at the top of this post (I'll have a grab code in the sidebar soon).

#SomethingWickedFall 48 Hour Kick-Off #Readathon - It's a wrap!

I can't believe how fast the 48 hours went by! I was bummed, but then I remember Elyse's readathon is still going on through tomorrow. Yay!

How did you do? Whether you read a lot, or not, don't despair because you know FrightFall is coming up in October and we're having 48 hour pre and post readathons for that as well. Stay tuned for all the details and sign-ups coming soon.

Meanwhile, the Something Wicked Fall event is still going on at Castle Macabre through October's end. In September, we're reading Gothic short stories. Read any spooky stories, with a Gothic theme, you like. I will have a master post up over there for people to share their reads in the comments (this will be up tomorrow). We are also going to be having a watch-along of the movie Hereditary within the next couple of weeks...and will probably watch a couple more. Frances had the excellent idea to watch Something Wicked This Way Comes since we will be doing a read-along of Bradbury's book in October. That watch-along will most likely be at the end of the month, after we've finished the book. Get all the details for the scary Fall events at this post at Castle Macabre.

Thanks for joining in this weekend! Hope your scary (or not) Fall reading is off to a great start!

Note: If you add a wrap-up to the linky, this is the same linky so include the words "wrap-up" or "wu" with your name/blog in the linky. Thanks!

Spring into Horror #Readathon - Mid Event Check-in #SpringHorror

How is the reading going for you? I've been doing okay. Still enjoying Dan Simmons' The Terror so much...and Murder on the Orient Express is enjoyable too. Hoping to get to the others on my list. I've been called for jury duty so hoping for some reading down time if I do actually get placed on a jury. My report date is April 23 so if I'm especially MIA that week that will be the reason. I'm not sure how it works, whether they sequester on weekends or not. Just hoping I don't get sequestered and miss the Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon on the 28th. In truth though, I'm actually looking forward to jury duty. I'm like Minnie Driver's character in that show Speechless. I feel like I've got a golden ticket and this...

The prize page is finally up! We have some awesome prizes this time around. I'm so excited for you guys! Check it out here.

Share your progress in the comments, or leave a link, or update us in the Facebook group.

I hope you're enjoying the readathon!

WINNERS - CHRISTINA, KRISTIN
Two winners - Kindle or PDF - International

Two winners will receive Breathe. Breathe., a mixed fiction collection of dark poetry and short stories, recently published by author Erin Al-Mehairi, garnering a Top 2 spot on Amazon's Best Selling Hot New Releases chart in women's poetry and a Top 20 in horror short stories, both places in which she is still trending. This one has deep soul and courage.

Breathe. Breathe. is a collection of dark poetry and short fiction that explores the deepest parts of the soul. It’s a representation of how life can break us apart and words can heal us. Deep, dark emotions are purged onto the pages awaiting you, urging you to get lost at sea and in the deep, dark woods of your mind. There is a fine line between breathing and death.

In Act One, readers are presented with a serial killer in Victorian London, a Lighthouse Keeper with an eerie legacy, a murderous spouse that seems to have walked right out of a mystery novel, and a treacherous Japanese lady who wants to stay immortal. The heightened fears in the twilight of our minds seep into the blackest of our nights, where we have to breathe in rhythm to stay alive.

In Act Two, the poetry turns more internal and pierces through the wall of denial and pain, bringing visceral emotions to the surface unleashing traumas such as domestic abuse, violence, and illness.

In the short stories, you’ll meet residents of Valhalla Lane whose lives are on a parallel track to collision, a man who is driven mad by the sound of a woodpecker, a teenage girl who wakes up on the beach and can’t find another soul in sight, a woman caught in a time shift pitting her up against the Egyptian goddess Anuket, and a little girl whose whole world changes when her favorite crayon color is discontinued.

Throughout the collection of dark poetry and fiction, readers will be haunted by themes of oppression, isolation, revenge, and madness told through folklore, nightmares, and often times raw, impulsive emotion.

With a foreword by the Bram Stoker Nominated author Brian Kirk, Breathe. Breathe. will at times unsettle you, at times embrace you. Erin Sweet Al-Mehairi, a veteran writer and editor of the written word, offers up a mixed set of pieces, identifying her as a strong, new voice in dark fiction that will tear out your heart, but then remind you to breathe.

Available now on Amazon in paperback and for kindle, Kobo, and more to come.

Spring into Horror #Readathon - Time for a scary spring kickoff! #SpringHorror

Here we go...off and running!

Remember, the one main "rule" of Spring into Horror is that you must read ONE scary book (which can be a thriller, mystery, Gothic novel, or similar for those who are faint of heart). The rest of the month? Keep reading scary if you want, or read whichever genre you choose.

I have some nice scary prizes lined up from Sinister Grin Press and Erin Al-Mehairi, and there may be more to come. Of course, I'll be offering a couple of prizes myself. Also, Sinister Grin Press is making possible free eBook ARCs of Jason Parent's new horror novel, They Feed for participants to read during the readathon. I posted about it in our Facebook group, but if you're not on Facebook, contact me via the contact tab in the menu and I'll get your email address to Erin so she can send you the book. Here's the cover and the synopsis:

The night uncovers all we wish not to see.

A troubled man enters a dusky park before sunset. A young woman follows, hidden in shadow. Both have returned to the park to take back something the past has stolen from them, to make right six long years of suffering, and to find justice or perhaps redemption—or maybe they'll
settle for some old-fashioned revenge.

But something evil is alive and awake in those woods, creatures that care nothing for human motivations. They’re driven by their own insatiable need: a ravenous, bottomless hunger.

The campgrounds are full tonight, and the creatures are starving. Before the night is over, they will feed.

An unrelenting tale of terror from Jason Parent, acclaimed author of
People of the Sun and What Hides Within.

Also, on the prize front...one of my favorite historical fiction authors, Robert Stephen Parry, is offering a choice of one of his books in print and it's international!

I'll have the official prize page posted hopefully by midweek in the coming week. Stay tuned!

Don't forget that you can participate even if you don't have a blog. If you have any questions about updates, etc., feel free to ask. I will be posting weekly check-ins on Saturdays so be sure to stop by and leave progress, or a link, in the comments of those posts.
